‘Voltron’ Movie is Being Made for Real

August 18, 2008

Another day, another chance for Hollywood to hastily scrape the lining of the 1980s’ uterus, hoping something they can rake out will resemble a movie if they project some light through it. This time: Voltron.

Fox-based New Regency has put robot project “Voltron: Defender of the Universe” into turnaround.

Ryan Kavanaugh’s financing and production venture Relativity Media is in negotiations to back the property, though on a more moderate budget, utilizing the type of cost-effective technology employed in films including “300.”

Last summer, New Regency picked up the rights to the property, adapted by scribe Justin Marks, who’s behind Warner Bros.’ bigscreen versions of “He-Man” and “Green Arrow.”

Marks’ take is described as a post-apocalyptic tale set in New York City and Mexico, where five survivors of an alien attack band together and end up piloting the five lion-shaped robots that combine and form the massive sword-wielding Voltron that helps battle Earth’s invaders.

The worst part will be when I see the trailer in the theater and inevitably hear some kids talking about how it looks like a Power Rangers rip-off. “Hey, idiots, Voltron was around first! No, you’re an old nerd!”

‘Righteous Kill’ R-Rated Trailer: Pacino and De Niro Do Whatever They Want

August 18, 2008

righteous-kill-trailer-2.jpg

Here’s the new effin’ & jeffin’-filled trailer to Righteous Kill, a film only notable for the presence of Al Pacino and Robert De Niro, two actors once considered impressive to watch. I like how you can tell both of them have completely abandoned the idea of taking direction. Just from this trailer, you get a pretty clear image of what the set was like: Pacino shouting at the camera guy, “You, with the picture machine, keep up, ’cause Bobby and I are gonna be quick, and we don’t do take-twos!” The director just sits there with his head in his hands, “God, why do they keep reasserting how much they like guns? We know they like guns.”

WOMEN’S WEAR DAILY reports today that Brad Pitt has linked up with Kiehl’s Since 1851.

Brad Pitt links up with Kiehl’s

Pitt’s name is NOT on the bottle, he won’t appear in the ads - and the sole purpose is to raise funds for charity.

WWD states that 100% of the net profits from sales of Kiehl’s Aloe Vera Biodegradable Liquid Body Cleanser, due out in October will benefit JPF Eco Systems, a charitable foundation created by Kiehl’s and Pitt to support global environmental initiatives that “minimize impact on the environment through thoughtful design.”

The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor

Brendan Fraser as Rick O'Connell on the set of...

The Mummy franchise was quite strong until the release of The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor.

I could attempt to come up with a more poetic way of stating this, but why bother?

It’s not a very good film.

Yes. It has some fantastic special effects.

Yes. It has quite a good cast, though I really do wish Rachel Weisz had come back. Brendan Fraser does not seem to gel as well on screen with Maria Bello.

The problem doesn’t really lie with the cast. They obviously didn’t have that much to work with.

No. It is not anything as funny as the first two films or even the offshoot, The Scorpion King.

Maybe this is all due to the change of director and writers?

Stephen Sommers knew how to make us laugh.

Rob Cohen may get you to jump out of your seat from time to time, but it’s just not the same thing.

Would I recommend it?

Maybe if you are really bored. Yes, I will be buying the DVD (or bluray), but that’s more for the sake of completion than anything else. Watch the first two films and then you can see how truly woeful this film is.

PowerPlus Pirana - Wind Up Shaver

August 15, 2008

wind-up-shaverThe PowerPlus Piranha is a wind up shaver which means there is no risk of the batteries going dead. Actually, there is still a risk, but not a problem as it can be charged by hand crank.

When you want to have a good shave then wind the crank a few turns and shave away. The internal dynamo generates enough electricity to keep the thing powered for a full shave. If you cannot be bothered winding it up (when the novelty wears off) then you can opt to charge it via a plug.

It’s not a bad idea for those who prefer electric shavers but occasionally forget the power cord when it’s needed the most.

Charging Info

* Shaving time after 1 minute winding: 1 to 2 minutes
* Trimmer time after 1 minute winding: 1 minute
* Shaving time fully charged: > 60 minutes
* Trimmer time fully charged: 45 minutes
* Charging time full charged: 8 hours

The PowerPlus Pirana wind up shaver costs £24.99 and is available from Nigels Eco Store.
