The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor

Brendan Fraser as Rick O'Connell on the set of...

The Mummy franchise was quite strong until the release of The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor.

I could attempt to come up with a more poetic way of stating this, but why bother?

It’s not a very good film.

Yes. It has some fantastic special effects.

Yes. It has quite a good cast, though I really do wish Rachel Weisz had come back. Brendan Fraser does not seem to gel as well on screen with Maria Bello.

The problem doesn’t really lie with the cast. They obviously didn’t have that much to work with.

No. It is not anything as funny as the first two films or even the offshoot, The Scorpion King.

Maybe this is all due to the change of director and writers?

Stephen Sommers knew how to make us laugh.

Rob Cohen may get you to jump out of your seat from time to time, but it’s just not the same thing.

Would I recommend it?

Maybe if you are really bored. Yes, I will be buying the DVD (or bluray), but that’s more for the sake of completion than anything else. Watch the first two films and then you can see how truly woeful this film is.

‘Punisher’ Might Lose Only Thing Keeping it Mildly Watchable

August 15, 2008

Whether you thought the red-band trailer looked bad-ass or like an embarrassing straight-to-DVD knock-off with none of the usual low-budget gore charm, the overall consensus on Punisher seemed to be that if it does prove itself entertaining, that value will be based solely on the gratuitous, insane violence. I mean, if you take away all the chairs violently shoved in eye-holes, what’s left? Answer: a probably awful movie without any chairs violently shoved in eye-holes. But that may be exactly what we’ll get, with Lionsgate reportedly pushing for a PG-13 rating:

One of my contacts deep within the bowels of Hollywood and close to the Punisher: War Zone project (source will not be named. Sorry!) told me today that the big fight over the Punisher project is Lionsgate wants a PG-13 cut to be released.

Lionsgate can always say, “This was never intended to be PG-13. We always had an R rating in mind.” but I trust Hollywood as far as I can throw it. I’m sure there’s some Lionsgate exec thinking this film can do what The Dark Knight has done with a PG-13 rating.

Of course, this is all just rumor for now, but I think it’s probably a bad sign that they’re reportedly also changing the title from Punisher: War Zone to Punisher: Lazer Tag Adventure.

New ‘Burn After Reading’ Poster Has That ‘Cowboy Leaning on a Barn’ Appeal

Finally, a movie where it might make sense for a collection of commemorative yard silhouettes to come with the special edition DVD. And just in time, too, because Mule Boy is getting lonely.

Dark Knight - Worth The Wait

July 25, 2008

More LouderVoice Reviews

I finally got to see Dark Knight last night in Portlaoise.

Was it worth the wait?

Hell yes!

Dark Knight is a fantastic movie and one that WB should be proud of.

Heath Ledger’s incarnation of The Joker was bound to attract plenty of media attention following his untimely demise, but even if he were still alive his portrayal of the Joker would have been memorable.

The man bat as played again by Christian Bale is as dark if not darker than his last appearance.

Visually there are some pretty impressive effects and some of the action shots are truly mindblowing.

However it wasn’t the special effects that got me, but the makeup. From the Joker’s “smile” to the grisly rendering of wounds the makeup was so fresh you could practically smell the blood!

Overall impression - pre-order the dvd or blu ray now!

I’d love to see it again.
