Hey, a comedy starring Steve Carell and Tina Fey? Sounds like someone has been watching the only parts of NBC’s primetime schedule that don’t make you want to die. This could be good, right? Nope:

Steve Carell and Tina Fey are set to play a married couple in “Date Night,” a 20th Century Fox comedy to be directed by Shawn Levy.

Josh Klausner wrote the script, based on an idea by Levy, whose 21 Laps will produce. Story follows a couple who find their routine date night becomes much more than just dinner and a movie.

Levy, who is shooting Fox’s “Night at the Museum 2: Battle of the Smithsonian,” intends the pic to be his next directing assignment.

If you didn’t catch that, Date Night is being directed by the man responsible for choking the final breaths out of Steve Martin with Cheaper by the Dozen and The Pink Panther, giving us our first taste of Ashton Kutcher-married-as-comedy with Just Married, and making Night at the Museum and its upcoming sequel. In other words, Carell and Fey will be the slices of bread holding together a shit sandwich.

What Just Happened? - Trailer

  What Just Happened? - Trailer
What Just Happened? is a winningly sharp comedy about two nail-biting, back-stabbing, roller-coaster weeks in the world of a middle-aged Hollywood producer — as he tries to juggle an actual life with an outrageous series of crises in his day job. Academy Award® winning director Barry Levinson reunites with Academy Award winning actor Robert De Niro and leading producer Art Linson, who wrote the screenplay based on his bestselling memoir. They all join with an all-star cast in this rollicking, shrewd tale of a man besieged by people who want him all to be sorts of things — a money maker, an ego buster, a bad news breaker, an artistic champion, a loyal husband, an all-knowing father, not to mention sexy, youthful and tuned-in – everything except for the one thing he and all the preposterously behaved people he’s surrounded by really are: bumbling human beings just trying to survive by any means necessary.
Directed by: Barry Levinson
Starring: Robert De Niro, Sean Penn, Catherine Keener, John Turturro, Robin Wright Penn

Cruise partner steps down

August 14, 2008

Paula Wagner, Tom Cruise’s long-time producing partner, has decided to step down from her role as CEO and co-owner of United Artists effectively ending her long-time partnership with Cruise.

A lot of speculation has floated in the industry regarding her departure but the strongest seems to be her alleged mismanagement of two movies from Cruise that have attracted a lot of negative buzz. The first was Lions for Lambs, which was a big flop, and the second one is Valkyrie, the troubled Bryan Singer-directed production that has met with a lot of difficulties and delays. Surprisingly, Wagner’s decision came a couple of weeks after her husband, a long-time agent of Cruise’s, also resigned from CAA to join Morgan Creek.

Cruise’s little empire is showing some cracks right now. He should reassess his domain and repolish his tarnished career.
