The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor

The Mummy franchise was quite strong until the release of The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor.

I could attempt to come up with a more poetic way of stating this, but why bother?

It’s not a very good film.

Yes. It has some fantastic special effects.

Yes. It has quite a good cast, though I really do wish Rachel Weisz had come back. Brendan Fraser does not seem to gel as well on screen with Maria Bello.

The problem doesn’t really lie with the cast. They obviously didn’t have that much to work with.

No. It is not anything as funny as the first two films or even the offshoot, The Scorpion King.

Maybe this is all due to the change of director and writers?

Stephen Sommers knew how to make us laugh.

Rob Cohen may get you to jump out of your seat from time to time, but it’s just not the same thing.

Would I recommend it?

Maybe if you are really bored. Yes, I will be buying the DVD (or bluray), but that’s more for the sake of completion than anything else. Watch the first two films and then you can see how truly woeful this film is.

First photos of The Day The Earth Stood Still

Promotions for the upcoming sci-fi remake The Day The Earth Stood Still is slowly heating up. The first salvo is a series of photos from the movie itself. I have posted one of the more awesome visuals in that series here.

The movie stars Keanu Reeves as the alien Klaatu. Co-starring with him is Jennifer Connely.

L’ Oreal Made Beyonce Look White for Ads

L’ Oreal is in the middle of a photoshop scandal. In their ads they made Beyonce look like a white girl. Did Beyonce approve her look in the ads?

John Edwards With His Love Child First Picture

John Edwards, who is on Barack Obama’s list of possible Vice Presidential running mates, was caught by the National Enquirer with his love child. The Enquirer actually got pictures inside a hotel room of Edwards and his daughter Frances Quinn Hunter at the Beverly Hilton hotel in Los Angeles, while he was visiting his mistress Rielle Hunter. The Enquirer reports:

“These photos are damning proof,” said a source close to the situation.

“He’s been caught lying about his affair with Rielle and their love child for many months – and now the proof against him is piling up."

“His elaborate coverup is unraveling at the seams.”

If Obama picks Edwards as a running mate, he’ll have no choice but to address this evidence. Does Obama really need this kind of baggage?

First Look at Balrog from ‘Street Fighter’, or Maybe Just a Dude with a Gun

Man, they really nailed a couple of broad physical traits (being large, black), and totally got the name right. Street Fighter is definitely on the right track. I don’t want to get too over-excited, but I have a feeling this is going to be The Dark Knight of video game movies. Except that the characters in this won’t so much be darker, more realistic versions of themselves as much as completely unrecognizable. And instead of being hailed as a breakthrough in the genre, it will be shit.
