‘Voltron’ Movie is Being Made for Real

August 18, 2008

Another day, another chance for Hollywood to hastily scrape the lining of the 1980s’ uterus, hoping something they can rake out will resemble a movie if they project some light through it. This time: Voltron.

Fox-based New Regency has put robot project “Voltron: Defender of the Universe” into turnaround.

Ryan Kavanaugh’s financing and production venture Relativity Media is in negotiations to back the property, though on a more moderate budget, utilizing the type of cost-effective technology employed in films including “300.”

Last summer, New Regency picked up the rights to the property, adapted by scribe Justin Marks, who’s behind Warner Bros.’ bigscreen versions of “He-Man” and “Green Arrow.”

Marks’ take is described as a post-apocalyptic tale set in New York City and Mexico, where five survivors of an alien attack band together and end up piloting the five lion-shaped robots that combine and form the massive sword-wielding Voltron that helps battle Earth’s invaders.

The worst part will be when I see the trailer in the theater and inevitably hear some kids talking about how it looks like a Power Rangers rip-off. “Hey, idiots, Voltron was around first! No, you’re an old nerd!”

PowerPlus Pirana - Wind Up Shaver

August 15, 2008

wind-up-shaverThe PowerPlus Piranha is a wind up shaver which means there is no risk of the batteries going dead. Actually, there is still a risk, but not a problem as it can be charged by hand crank.

When you want to have a good shave then wind the crank a few turns and shave away. The internal dynamo generates enough electricity to keep the thing powered for a full shave. If you cannot be bothered winding it up (when the novelty wears off) then you can opt to charge it via a plug.

It’s not a bad idea for those who prefer electric shavers but occasionally forget the power cord when it’s needed the most.

Charging Info

* Shaving time after 1 minute winding: 1 to 2 minutes
* Trimmer time after 1 minute winding: 1 minute
* Shaving time fully charged: > 60 minutes
* Trimmer time fully charged: 45 minutes
* Charging time full charged: 8 hours

The PowerPlus Pirana wind up shaver costs £24.99 and is available from Nigels Eco Store.

Mike Myers Will Do Accent for ‘Bastards’

August 15, 2008

Look, I know you promised yourself you’d never again see another Mike Myers movie after he pretended to be Indian and sang a Steve Miller Band cover for no apparent reason, but I’m afraid you might have to if you want to see Tarantino’s latest. Yeah, the Love Guru is in that now:

Mike Myers has been recruited by Quentin Tarantino to join the ensemble cast of “Inglorious Bastards,” the Tarantino-scripted pic that the Weinstein Co. and Universal will put into production Oct. 13 in Germany.

Myers will play British Gen. Ed Fenech, a military mastermind who takes part in hatching a plot to wipe out Nazi leaders.

Mike Myers playing a British officer? It seems like that could be really distracting if he were already known and moderately despised for playing a character with a heavy English accent that inspired a generation of amateur impressionists. But since that isn’t the case, this seems fine. Actually, this answers a few questions I had when I was reading the script. All the scenes where Gen. Ed Fenech throws Mini-Gen. Ed Fenech make a lot more sense now.

Anchor Clock for those who Love Popeye

August 14, 2008

anchor-clock-for-the-sailor-manA bunch of weird gadgets are available these days with most of them being USB. This one however is not USB but is still weird. It’s a clock shaped like an anchor. The anchor clock shows over 10 gears which all move slowly when the clock has power. Two C type batteries are needed to power the clock.

The only thing that isn’t weird about this clock is that it has real hands that tell time. Apart from that, I think the rest (including shape) is just plain odd.

The Anchor Clock costs $115 and is available from Brando.

Exposed Flip Clock

August 13, 2008

exposed-flip-clockA number of ways of telling time are available such as a sun dial, pendulum clock, digital clocks and watches. The latest clock to appear is the Exposed Flip Clock which looks extremely unique as it’s innards are exposed for all to see.

The Flip Clock is just like any regular old fashioned flip click which has small plates that rotate against a bent metal finger and when the clock rotates to a certain point the next plate drops down to reveal the next minute or hour. With this clock you also get to see the insides though which includes seeing the gears and everything else that keeps the thing ticking.

The Exposed Flip Clock is available from ThinkGeek and costs $59.99.

Exposed Flip Clock Details

* Battery powered alarm “flip” style clock
* 24 hour alarm
* Remarkably precise
* Requires 2 “C” cell batteries (not included)
