Rob Schneider in Zohan

You Don’t Mess With The Zohan was released in Ireland today, so I escaped the damp weather by seeking refuge this evening in my local cinema.

I wasn’t quite sure what to expect from Sandler. I knew it was a comedy about an Israeli commando who wants to be a hairdresser.

What I didn’t know, or expect, was that I would find myself literally laughing out loud. At some points I was almost crying!

Zohan is a farce. It pokes fun at Israelis, Palestinians, Americans and just about everyone else.

It takes political incorrectness to a whole new level. The stereotyping alone makes it worth going to see, as it is sheer genius.

The script, while a bit weak in parts, is hilarious. Some of the set pieces made me think of Monty Python in their heyday.

So what about the cast?

Sandler entertains and has great presence, while Emmanuelle Chriqui is simply stunning (she can act too!). Schneider does Schneider without really extending himself, but he doesn’t need to.
You may remember John Turturro from Mr Deeds, where he played the “super sneaky” butler, or as one of the agents in Transformers. This time round he plays Zohan’s nemesis, but of course there is a funny twist..

If you want literally a good laugh, then don’t miss it. I was having a pretty glum evening and it really cheered me up.

Banlieue 13 - Ultimatum

July 25, 2008

David Belle in a chase sequence from Banlieue 13.

According to EuropaCorp the sequel to Banlieue 13 is in pre-production.

A three month filming schedule in Serbia this summer, with a cinema release in 2009 has been announced.

Both David Belle and Cyril Raffaelli are rumoured to be involved, as is Luc Besson, but exact details are still a bit scant.

If the two principles of Banlieue 13 are involved I’d expect there to be plenty of action and parkour.

More Good News For Bond Fans

July 23, 2008

The James Bond 007 Gun Symbol

Image via Wikipedia

With the new Bond movie scheduled for release later this year an extra push on Bond related material is to be expected.

Earlier this year, which is also Ian Fleming’s centenary, Penguin books released a very attractive set of the original novels, while the Imperial War Museum in London is holding a fantastic exhibition celebrating the life of Fleming and the cinema incarnation.

For blu ray fans the news is positive with six James Bond titles scheduled for blu ray release:
Sean Connery stars in “Dr. No,” “From Russia with Love,” and “Thunderball”; Roger Moore stars in “Live and Let Die” and “For Your Eyes Only”; and Pierce Brosnan stars in “Die Another Day.”

Each title will be available individually or as part of a “three pack”.

While the titles are available for pre-order via Amazon I couldn’t see an actual release date.
